Goan Olympics Gold Medalist -5 Goan Heros of India's Hockey Gold winning team of 1948 London Olympics

Goan Olympics Gold Medalist

When people speak of sports in Goa, the names that come to our mind are those of the like of Bruno Cutinho, Bramhnand Salgaonkar and few other who have represented India. But I hardly guess anyone knows of these five great sporstman of Goa "Walter D'Souza, Leo Pinto, Lawrie Fernandes, Maxie Vaz & Reggie Rodrigues" who not only were great sportsman who represented India but were part of India's Hockey Gold winning team at the 1948 London Olympics.

I guess the youth of Goa today did not even know that there were Goan's who have excelled in sports and gone all the way to Win Gold for the country at the Olympics.

Being a philatelic and a die hard lover of Goa, I was extremely excited when I heard of the wonderful news that the Department of Posts, India had come out with a FDC on these 5 Goan jewels along with the mascot of 2010 Commonwealth Games to be held at New Delhi. Though its sad to know that these Five Jewels are not amongst us anymore.

I hope the Goan sports person's today, look forward to these 5 Goan sports heroes make them their Idol and win laurels for the country. Ms. Talasha Prabhu is the only Goan representing India at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and we all wish her all the very best.
